Status: 11/11/2022 00:00

The World Cup in Qatar will start soon – but more than half of Germans have a loud voice ARD Germany trend don’t intend to watch games. Because of the high prices, many want to spend less money on Christmas presents.

From November 20th to December 18th the men’s soccer World Cup will take place in Qatar. However, interest in the games is limited – at least a week before the start of the tournament. Noisy ARD Germany trend in the morning magazine so far, more than half of Germans (56 percent) assume that they will not watch any of the transmissions. For the female respondents, this proportion is even 63 percent.

15 percent want to watch fewer games than at previous World Cups. Only a fifth of those surveyed intend to tune in to just as many (18 percent) or even more games (two percent). Nine percent do not yet know whether they will follow the World Cup or not. The venue of Qatar is considered controversial because of the human rights situation, but also because of the date at the end of the year.

Many want to spend less on Christmas presents

The Christmas business will also start in the coming weeks, but the high prices are clearly dampening the consumer mood of those surveyed. About a third of Germans (30 percent) would like to spend less money on Christmas presents than last year. A further six percent even want to forgo buying Christmas presents this year, especially people from low-income households.

A good half of those surveyed (54 percent) assume that they will spend just as much on gifts as they did last year. Only eight percent stated that they wanted to spend more.

Sunday question: Union before Greens and SPD

In the Sunday question, there is little movement compared to the survey of November 3: If there were federal elections next Sunday, the Union would remain the strongest force with 28 percent of the votes. The Greens came to 19 percent, closely followed by the SPD, which lost one percentage point (18 percent). 14 percent of those surveyed would continue to choose the AfD. The FDP would be one point more than a week ago at seven percent, the left would lose one percentage point at four percent.

investigation facility

Universe: Eligible voters in Germany
Collection method: Random telephone and online survey
Survey period: November 8th to 9th, 2022
number of cases: 1225 respondents (801 telephone interviews and 424 online interviews)
Weighting: according to sociodemographic characteristics and recollection of voting behavior; Sunday question with separate weighting
fluctuation range: 2 percentage points for a share value of 10 percent
3 percentage points for a share value of 50 percent
Implementing institute: infratest dimap

Results are rounded to whole percentages to avoid false expectations of precision. Because for all representative surveys, fluctuation ranges must be taken into account. In the case of a survey with 1000 respondents, these amount to around three percentage points for large parties and around one point for smaller parties. In addition, the rounding error is significant for small parties. For these reasons, no party below three percent is shown in the Sunday question.
