Status: 01/19/2023 8:00 p.m

The government hesitates – and the population is divided. In the current Germany trend for the ARD morning magazine only a slim majority is in favor of supplying heavy main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Should Germany deliver heavy battle tanks like the “Leopard” to Ukraine or not? This question divides the population in Germany. With 46 percent speaks in the current Germany trend for the ARD morning magazine a narrow majority of those surveyed voted in favour. Almost as many – 43 percent – are against it. Eleven percent cannot or do not want to commit themselves. Clear differences can be seen between East and West, younger and older people and the respective party preferences.

While every second person in the western federal states supports the delivery of heavy battle tanks to Ukraine, in the east a majority of 59 percent rejects this step. Nationwide, younger and middle age groups are also predominantly against the delivery of heavy battle tanks. 52 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds say: “Germany should not deliver”.

Biggest rejection among AfD supporters

According to the survey, however, the mood changes with increasing age. For example, among those surveyed over the age of 65, only 36 percent are against a delivery, while 52 percent are in favor of it.

Significant differences are noted GermanyTrend also with regard to the party preference of the surveyed eligible voters. Supporters of the Union and the Greens show the greatest approval for the delivery of heavy battle tanks to Ukraine with 66 and 61 percent respectively. The result is less clear among people who feel they belong to the SPD – 49 percent of them think: “should deliver”.

Among FDP sympathizers, opponents and supporters of the battle tank question are balanced at 48 percent each. The statistics show the greatest rejection among AfD supporters: 84 percent of them reject a delivery of heavy battle tanks to Ukraine.

Sunday question: Traffic light with a narrow own majority

Hardly any changes can be seen in the Sunday question compared to the previous survey. The SPD has gained one percentage point, AfD and Linke each lost one. The traffic light parties from the SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and FDP also achieve in the current Germany trend for the ARD morning magazine a majority of 44 percent.

A third question that infatest dimap on behalf of the ARD has asked relates to the topic of nutrition. At 49 percent, almost every second person states that they have at least reduced their consumption of meat or sausages in the past five years. Eight percent say they are vegetarian or vegan. “Not much has changed” for 41 percent of those surveyed.

investigation facility

Universe: Eligible voters in Germany
Collection method: Random telephone and online survey
Survey period: January 17-18, 2023
number of cases: 1211 respondents (792 telephone interviews and 419 online interviews)
Weighting: according to sociodemographic characteristics and recollection of voting behavior; Sunday question with separate weighting
fluctuation range: 2 percentage points for a share value of 10 percent
3 percentage points for a share value of 50 percent
Implementing institute: infratest dimap

Results are rounded to whole percentages to avoid false expectations of precision. Because for all representative surveys, fluctuation ranges must be taken into account. In the case of a survey with 1000 respondents, these amount to around three percentage points for large parties and around one point for smaller parties. In addition, the rounding error is significant for small parties. For these reasons, no party below three percent is shown in the Sunday question.
