On January 7th, Franz Beckenbauer, probably the most important German footballer ever, died. He celebrated great success not only as a player, but also as a coach. There is great sympathy both nationally and internationally; Berti Vogts even suggested naming the DFB Cup after the sports legend.

The funeral should take place in the closest circle of family and friends. On January 19th, FC Bayern will host an official memorial ceremony in honor of Franz Beckenbauer in the Allianz Arena. This can be followed live on TV.

Beckenbauer memorial ceremony follows winter sports

From 11.15 a.m. on January 19th, the focus will be on winter sports on the Erste, with the Ski World Cup starting. At around 1 p.m. there will be a women’s ski jumping broadcast from Zao; the station will summarize both competitions in its coverage. The Biathlon World Cup from Antholz is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

Big rescheduling because of Franz Beckenbauer

No effort was spared to ensure that both the sports program and the commemoration ceremony could be taken into account on this day. The International Biathlon Union, together with the organizing committee in Antholz, has brought the biathlon race forward.

ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky explains: “We are now able to report comprehensively on the memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer as well as show biathlon. We would like to thank those responsible at biathlon very much for this.

In fact, this approach is by no means self-evident. Last but not least, it underlines the importance that Franz Beckenbauer, who died at the age of 78, enjoys throughout the entire sports world.

Esther Sedlaczek dismayed after Beckenbauer’s death

The presenter Esther Sedlaczek is one of the many celebrities who spoke out publicly after the death of Franz Beckenbauer. On January 8th, she shared a photo on her Instagram channel that shows her together with the “Kaiser”. She wrote, among other things:

“I’ve been thinking the whole time about which lines would be appropriate to this sad news, but there are no suitable or appropriate words.”

The football world has “lost not only one of the greatest, but also one of the most beloved,” said the 38-year-old. Franz Beckenbauer “deeply impressed” her as a person. It should therefore be a matter of course for her to be present at the upcoming memorial service.
