Aquarium in Berlin-Mitte burst – water flows on the street
The fire brigade and police have been in large-scale operations in Berlin-Mitte since early Friday morning. A large aquarium has burst, the street is under water. The situation is unclear.
According to the police, the large aquarium “AquaDom” in Berlin-Mitte burst on Friday morning for previously unknown reasons.
“The water in this aquarium has almost completely leaked out, both in the building and on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse,” a fire department spokesman told rbb on site. “Due to the high water pressure in the aquarium, when it burst it took away a whole lot of objects that are now scattered on the street.”
Fire brigade on duty since 6:10 a.m
The fire brigade has been on a large scale operation with around 100 firefighters in the immediate vicinity of the Berlin Cathedral since 6:10 a.m., it was said. There are also many police forces. The area is under water and is cordoned off over a wide area. Traffic jams occur.
The completely destroyed aquarium with a capacity of one million liters is located in the City-Quartier DomAquarée. There is also a hotel in the building. The people housed there would now be taken outside, said the fire department spokesman. You will be cared for in BVG buses.
“We saw several people from the rescue services, one person is said to be slightly injured according to the current state of knowledge,” the spokesman continued. The situation is unclear.
They are now talking to the operator as to whether the bursting of the aquarium will affect the statics of the building, it said. The aquarium had burst for an initially unknown reason.
“Extremely much” water on the road
The police are calling for the area to be bypassed on a large scale. It must also be checked whether the underground car park is affected.
According to the traffic information center, Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse between Spandauer Strasse and Schloßbrücke is closed due to an underwash. There is “extremely much water” on the road.
“I only heard a very loud crash and saw that the large aquarium was broken,” said an eyewitness. “I then looked ahead and saw that there was a lot of furniture lying on the street and then I realized that the aquarium had just burst and the things had been washed out.”
The building complex called “Dom-Aquarée” includes the large aquarium “Sea Life” and the so-called “Aqua-Dom”. As stated on the “Dom-Aquarée” website, the “Aqua-Dom” is the “largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world” and was extensively modernized by summer 2020. According to this, around 1,500 fish live in the 14 meter high tank.
