Apple’s Mac event probably (also) focused on games – and without an entry-level MacBook Pro?

It won’t be long before it’s keynote time again: On Monday, Apple invited people to the “Scary Fast” event. According to a new report, Apple could (also) bring gaming to the forefront of the event – especially to demonstrate what the new M3 processors that will be in the new Macs can do. The company took a similar approach with the A17 Pro, the new chip in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. This was announced together with new AAA game titles that are said to be of console quality.

As Macrumors now summarizes, Apple could emphasize high-end gaming at the keynote. One of the reasons: The M3, like the A17 Pro, should accelerate ray tracing graphics effects in hardware. Furthermore, the system-on-chip (SoC) is the first notebook processor to be built using the 3-nanometer process, which promises performance improvements for both the CPU and GPU cores. Apple is trying to attract more developers. There are also new tools such as the Game Porting Toolkit, which makes it relatively easy to bring fast Windows games to the Mac.

It is conceivable that new AAA game titles will also be announced at the same time as the “Scary fast” event. It is already known that the remake of “Resident Evil 4”, “Death Stranding” in the director’s cut and “Assassin’s Creed Mirage” are coming to the Mac. Developers like Capcom and Sony are also interested in other new titles, with “Resident Evil Village” coming soon to iPhone and iPad, which makes a Mac version likely. macOS 14 aka Sonoma also comes with a special game mode that optimizes the system for gaming.

Meanwhile, there is new information about which Macs Apple will show on Monday. So far, people were thinking of three MacBook Pro series and a new iMac – all with M3 or M3 Pro and M3 Max. However, the usually well-informed Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman now reports that there will probably be three models. The MacBook Pro 13 with a simple M3 chip is supposedly (still) will not appear, just like new iPads and AirPods. There is more USB-C hardware on offer, such as an Apple mouse with a new connection.

When it comes to Macs, Gurman is thinking of two iMacs with 24-inch displays, M3 chips and a revised stand; the colors supposedly remain the same. For the MacBook Pro 14 and 16, Apple should switch to the M3 Pro and M3 Max – with a maximum of 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores. This time there will also be 24 and 48 GB of RAM as storage options. The demonstration of the Apple event will take place this time for the press in New York City and not in Cupertino – at 1 a.m. German time.
