According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple would correct next year one of the main injustices of its Pro models this year, by installing, on both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro, a “tetraprism” zoom “. This currently allows the iPhone 15 Pro Max to have x5 magnification.
As is often the case with the “Pro” iPhones, Apple would do next year… what it could (and should) have done this year. We learned this week from the essential Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who has proven himself in terms of indiscretions devoted to Apple, that the Cupertino giant would have the idea of installing the “tetraprism” zoom of its iPhone 15 Current Pro Max on its two “Pro” models in 2024.
Understand that this new feature, currently reserved only for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, would be installed next year as much on the iPhone 16 Pro Max as on the iPhone 16 Pro. The idea would then be to allow the “Pro” (non-Max) model to go from a current x3 zoom, to the x5 magnification so praised by Apple during its last keynote. This change would therefore correct one of the main injustices of the range as we know it today.
A new feature that the iPhone 15 Pro is (cruelly?) lacking this year
In a note shared on Medium, the TF International Securities analyst tells us, for the rest, a little more about the price of the lens which allows the iPhone 15 Pro Max to offer a x5 zoom. We discover in particular that the addition of this “tetraprism” lens to all “Pro” iPhones will lead to a price increase of around 30% according to Ming-Chi Kuo, especially since Apple would have raised the requirements of validation for this telephoto lens.
In total, prices could reach 6 dollars, or even 6.50 dollars per unit. A sum which concerns only one of the three lenses installed on the back of high-end iPhones, and to which we must of course add, among other things, the price of the sensor which will go behind it.
That being said, the operation would remain very profitable for Apple, since the transition to a more unified range in terms of Zoom would allow a considerable increase in demand. Ming-Chi Kuo thus mentions deliveries of “Pro” iPhones increasing by around 110% in 2024. That is to say between 70 and 80 million units distributed next year.
A situation which would primarily benefit the manufacturers of these “tetraprism” lenses: Largan, Crystal-Optech and Lante Optics. Crystal-Optech and Lante Optics are also expected to increase their production capacity by at least 50% by next year.
