Apple is apparently negotiating with Google about integrating AI technology into iPhones. This is about the new Google software Gemini. It is intended to provide iPhone functions related to generative AI.
According to a media report, Apple wants to use technology from Google when expanding the iPhone operating system to include artificial intelligence (AI). The US company has also developed its own AI, but will rely on the Gemini program for functions related to so-called generative AI, wrote the Bloomberg news agency, citing insiders. Generative AI can create complete texts, images or videos based on just a few keywords.
In addition to Gemini, ChatGPT was apparently also on the short list: According to Bloomberg, Apple also had discussions with the ChatGPT developer OpenAI. The companies could not immediately be reached for comment.
Gemini image generator switched off
Gemini is a further development of the Google AI Bard, which made a fictitious answer when it premiered at the beginning of 2023. After initial tests, users initially commented positively on Gemini’s capabilities. In the meantime, however, the company had to switch off the AI’s image generator because it had made errors in the representation of historical motifs.
Apple is lagging behind in AI
Apple is lagging behind other technology companies in introducing AI into its products. Company boss Tim Cook emphasized a few weeks ago that his company was investing heavily in this technology and promised details about this in the coming months.
Apple and Google have been working closely together for years. Among other things, Google is offered as the standard search engine in the Internet browsers of Apple devices. However, this cooperation has come into the sights of the authorities because of a possible abuse of market power. Google has already agreed to supply AI technologies for Samsung’s top smartphones.
