Apple is threatened with a lawsuit worth billions in the UK. Consumer advocates accuse the US company of deliberately slowing down the computing speed of certain iPhone models.
In order to cover up problems with the batteries, the iPhone manufacturer has “secretly” reduced the performance of certain models using software, it is said.
On behalf of British users, consumer advocate Justin Gutmann applied to the London Competition Appeal Tribunal on Tuesday for a claim for damages of the equivalent of 1.8 billion euros plus interest.
Apple called the allegations “unfounded”. With the exception of a small number of models, the batteries in the iPhone 6s were not defective. The company offered a free exchange for the affected devices.
In addition, the power management software update released in 2017, tailored to deal with older or low-charge batteries, reduced the iPhone 6s’ performance by an average of just 10 percent.
