It is the master key to your most valuable data: the four or six-digit unlock code on the iPhone. Anyone who knows him has access to EVERYTHING – including bank accounts and photos.
Criminals know this too. They spy on someone typing in the PIN, for example on the train or in a bar. Then they steal the iPhone. They then use the code to empty their victims’ bank accounts. They often also change the Apple ID and thus block those who have been stolen from their own cell phones.
The Wall Street Journal, among others, reported on hundreds of such cases. Explosive: The criminals were able to access all saved passwords in the so-called key ring.
Free update for everyone
Has now With its operating system update iOS 17.3, Apple has released a new function for all iPhones that is intended to put a stop to thieves. You can download the update for free under “General” in Settings.
The new theft protection is as simple as it is ingenious: If the iPhone is used outside of a familiar environment (e.g. at home or at work), the option of entering a pin for sensitive areas is no longer possible! Instead, a facial scan (Face ID) or fingerprint is now mandatory.
Also included: A security delay for critical changes such as the PIN and Apple ID. Such adjustments can only be made after an hour outside of familiar locations.
► IMPORTANT: In order for the new protection to take effect, you must first activate it.
HOW to arm the protection
Go to “Face ID & Code” in the settings. Then scroll down to “Stolen Device Protection”. You must turn this option on. Then the protection is active – and can save your money in an emergency.
In addition, Apple is giving everyone a donation with the update iPhone-Users a new background image and the ability to edit playlists together on Apple Music. A corresponding function has existed at Spotify for years.
