Mobile phone, tablet, laptop – and each device has its own charging cable. That should now be over, at least in Europe. The story of an unraveling.

Alex Agius Saliba sits in an armchair in the Brussels Parliament building. He has a corner office, twelfth floor, big windows, blue sky outside. Next to the MEP are suitcases, because he will fly to his home country of Malta today, back to the constituency. Agius Saliba also always has to think about all the chargers when packing. “I have five,” he says. “For the mobile phone, the laptop, the smartwatch, the tablet, the headphones.”
