Because Apple did not publish any release notes for the new beta of macOS 12.2, the news came very late: The Apple Music app in the new operating system version was completely rewritten and is now a native app.
The new version of Apple Music now uses AppKit and thus native technology from macOS. As 9to5Mac reports, Apple uses JET to turn web content into native apps.
Apple had presented the Music app with macOS Catalina 2019. It is the replacement for the iTunes app and works in almost the same way on the manufacturer’s other platforms. The big disadvantage: It is actually a kind of web app that displays its content like a browser and is therefore quite slow. Apple has now reconsidered its strategy and with macOS Monterey 12.2, users will be faced with major changes, as a user reported on Twitter.
The change mainly affects the performance of the search function in the music app. This is now much higher. The new technology is also noticeable when scrolling through the search results and other page content. Scrolling has become noticeably smoother, according to the 9to5Mac report.
However, there are also some drawbacks. According to the report, the new app is a bit simpler. That may be because it’s still a beta. Perhaps the visual effects will come back, or Apple has permanently removed them for performance reasons.
The 9to5Mac report also shows that the Universal Control function, with which an iPhone or iPad can be operated with the trackpad and keyboard of a Mac without additional hardware, has not yet been activated. It is now expected for the first quarter of 2022.
