In less than two weeks, Apple will most likely not only introduce the iPhone 14, but also the next generation of the Apple Watch. In line with the new Apple Watch Series 8, Apple will also release watchOS 9 for all users. To get us in the mood for the new features of watchOS 9, Apple executives Sumbul Desai and Deidre Caldbeck sat down with Krystal Lora for an interview about the upcoming software update.

Apple wants to improve our sleep

The interview mainly focuses on the improvements in sleep tracking that will be introduced with watchOS 9. The latest version of watchOS will not only allow users to track how long they’ve slept, but also their sleep stages. In the sleep app, for example, you can check how long you were in deep sleep or in the REM phase and how often you woke up during the night.

Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 introduces sleep stages for even more detailed insights. The Apple Watch uses the acceleration sensor and the heart rate sensor to recognize which sleep phase the user is currently in. The associated data can be viewed in the Sleep app on the Apple Watch. The Health app on the iPhone also offers comparison charts with more detailed information on sleep duration as well as additional metrics such as heart rate and respiration rate.

Apple executives explain in an interview that the new sleep measurement was made possible by one of the largest and most diverse studies ever conducted on the subject of sleep. The function is based on machine learning models. They were trained according to the clinical gold standard of polysomnography. Users can contribute to the improvements by providing data on their sleep stages through the Research app. This data then flows into the “Apple Heart and Movement Study”.

watchOS 9 brings a number of other innovations, including more watch faces, more complications with additional information, and personalization options. The updated training app brings enhanced metrics, views and training experiences inspired by high-performance athletes. In addition, a new atrial fibrillation (AFib) history function provides a more accurate picture of the patient’s health.

watchOS 9 is usually unveiled a few days before the latest generation of Apple Watch goes on sale. The company holds on Wednesday, September 7th special event in Apple Park. So watchOS 9 will likely be part of the event when Tim Cook and his team announced the Apple Watch Series 8 and the rumored Apple Watch Pro introduce.
