Smartphones that do not have visible apps? This should be possible with the “AI Phone”, a concept that Deutsche Telekom presented together with two partner companies at the MWC.
Deutsche Telekom, together with two partner companies, has presented the concept of a new type of smartphone in which the user no longer sees apps. Instead, with the “AI Phone” he uses voice commands to interact with an artificial intelligence (AI) that collects information for him from the Internet and shows it on the display, such as flight bookings or gift suggestions. “The future will be free of apps,” said Brain Technologies founder and boss Jerry Yue at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
The US technology company comes with the AI of the smartphone, which is being developed as a cloud-based version and as a model that also works offline. The chip manufacturer Qualcomm is also taking part in the project. It is still unclear whether one of the AI phones will ever come onto the market. The American Yue firmly believes so.
For the cloud version, Telekom uses its existing mid-range device T-Phone, which runs on the Google Android operating system. The smartphone itself is nothing special – what is done with it is: the use of AI to make the view of apps superfluous. From the perspective of industry experts, the project could be the start of a trend in which apps are losing influence and smartphone usage is changing radically.
