Apartments for students in Munich: Study in a tent – Munich

Oh, the first semester! Away from home, your first apartment, complete freedom and frozen pizza every day. Even if this time, like almost everything, is romanticized in retrospect, there has never been a period in life in which so much, indeed everything, seemed possible.

Your own place, even if it was just a room: proof of adulthood, proof that you can do it without your mother and her ham noodles, without your father and his manual skills. Well, the mirror and the coat rack were hanging a little crooked, and the first attempts at growing plants ended in several deaths from thirst. But, hey: get up when you feel like it! Eat whenever you want! Invite friends at any time of the day or night! This is what freedom tastes like.

It’s just a shame that this freedom comes at a price in Munich – a price that many students can’t afford, because a normal 25 square meter room can easily cost more than 1,000 euros in rent per month. Nothing will change that quickly, as many student residences can still be built.

At least there are ideas: The Munich Spatial Development Company (MRG), a wholly owned subsidiary of the city, owns the campsite at Thalkirchener Floßlände and offers first-year students the opportunity to camp there throughout October for half the usual price. That would be around 250 euros per month, based on the price table for the place for one person and a small tent.

But everything is there for that: a bus stop, a self-service shop, restaurants, washing machines and dryers. However, you have to go outside to use the morning toilet, and showering costs 2.10 euros.

In any case, the offer offers the opportunity to later become romantic: We had nothing… But alone in the evening on my air mattress, with the crickets chirping outside – it was nice. The children of today’s freshmen roll their eyes in annoyance and think: Hopefully I can move out soon.
