From a walk-in shower, from a wall breakthrough, from fine parquet, crackling open fire in the living room or even a winter garden in the rented terraced house. Many long-term tenants would be willing to modernize at their own expense. But major renovations in rented properties are a legally tricky thing. Under no circumstances should tenants create facts without the landlord’s okay, warns Jutta Hartmann, spokeswoman for the German Tenants’ Association.
