The American Secretary of State Antony Blinken has the following task to shoulder in the Middle East these days: The USA must remain unwaveringly loyal to Israel in the war against Hamas, but must not offend its own Arab allies in the process. Washington must therefore credibly campaign for the protection of Palestinian civilians in Israel and at the same time make the very idea of a later expulsion of the Palestinians by the Israelis absolutely unthinkable. This is actually an impossible task given the deadly hardening in relations between Israelis and Palestinians following the October Hamas massacres.
