Antitrust Law – New Rules for Online Corporations – Economy

The EU Commission will probably be able to intervene faster and more effectively in the future if Internet platforms such as Google and Facebook restrict competition. The relevant EU law is just a big step closer to being passed: Last December, the Commission presented the “Law on Digital Markets”, a regulation that gives the largest online companies clear rules to protect their smaller rivals. The Council of Ministers, the decision-making body of the member states, has discussed this proposal and the governments have now largely agreed on a compromise, as reported by EU diplomats. This is now to be adopted at the end of November as a negotiating position for the subsequent talks with the European Parliament. Parliament will probably be able to determine its negotiating position in mid-December. Both sides hope to reach an agreement on the final legal text by summer.
