Jewish life in Germany is still subject to hostilities and even attacks. The number of anti-Semitic crimes is increasing – also on the Internet. The government now wants to take more targeted action.
The federal government wants to better protect Jewish life from prejudice and hostility and take stronger action against anti-Semitism. For this, the Federal Cabinet has the first “National strategy against anti-Semitism and for Jewish lifeThe aim of the strategy is to make the life of Jews visible in all its facets and to counteract hatred of Jews, explained the Federal Government’s Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Felix Klein.
The strategy serves to “review and adjust ongoing measures and programs,” said Klein. “It can be used to determine what is missing in order to create optimal conditions for preventing and combating hatred of Jews.”
In view of the increase in the number of anti-Semitic crimes in recent years, such a strategy is “more urgent than ever,” it said. Last year, 2021, the police registered 3,027 anti-Semitic crimes nationwide. Jews are hardly protected online either: “The number of hate postings on the Internet has long since exploded,” it says.
From federal level to sports clubs
The around 50-page strategy aims to address five fields of action: In addition to preventing and combating anti-Semitism, the paper also focuses on research, education and awareness-raising. Another field of action is dedicated to the culture of remembrance. The strategy calls for new forms of communicating National Socialism because fewer and fewer eyewitnesses are able to report on their experiences.
All levels of government and society should work together to implement it. It not only formulates goals for the federal government, the strategy should also serve as a guide for schools or sports clubs, for example. Three so-called cross-sectional dimensions should be taken into account: the perspective of those affected, digitization, for example when conveying history, and the formation of sustainable structures.
