When you see Miss Novak walking across the schoolyard, filmed in slow motion, you can sense the nonchalance that she always promises her students, something otherworldly, magical, unreal, a touch of happiness. Even though this role goes in the opposite direction, Mia Wasikowska has retained the charm that she displayed as Alice in Tim Burton’s Wonderland. Only her smile seems a little fake, there’s something gently diabolical about it.
