Queen Elizabeth II has been on the British throne for decades: In the coming year, her accession to the throne will be 70 years ago and the Queen will be honored with two coins for the occasion.

On the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne (95) next year, the British mint, the Royal Mint, is honoring the Queen with two new coins.

In addition to a 5 pound coin, which is traditionally issued with a new design on jubilees to the throne, a coin worth 50 pence also commemorates the Queen in 2022, as the Royal Mint announced in Llantrisant on Wednesday.

“The platinum anniversary celebration is a spectacular first for both the British monarchy and British coinage,” said coin expert Clare Maclennan. “It fits perfectly with this historic anniversary being celebrated with a 50p coin – Britain’s most popular collector’s coin.”

Each coin shows a new design, for which an artist has been commissioned. The portrait of the Queen, designed by Jody Clark, is emblazoned on one side. The Royal Mint is also issuing three more coins for the New Year. A 50 pence coin denotes the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, a 2 pound coin each honors the singer Vera Lynn, who died in 2020, and the inventor Alexander Graham Bell, who died 100 years ago.
