Annette Kurschus elected as the new council chairwoman – politics

The President of the Westphalian Church, Annette Kurschus, has been elected as the new Council President of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) in Bremen.

Kurschus succeeds Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, who did not run for re-election. It received 126 out of 140 votes and now represents around 20 million Protestants in Germany.

The 58-year-old Kurschus was previously deputy EKD council chairwoman and is, after Margot Käßmann, the second woman to head the EKD in its history. The sermons of the calm and deliberate theologian are particularly valued.
