Annalena Baerbock: Trip to the Gulf region delayed due to plane breakdown politics

Annalena Baerbock’s (Green) trip to the Gulf region has been delayed due to a plane breakdown. The Federal Foreign Minister was scheduled to fly to Saudi Arabia at 7.30 a.m. on Monday morning.

The departure had to be postponed by up to one and a half hours due to a technical defect in the planned aircraft of the Bundeswehr’s flight readiness, according to delegation circles. First, a replacement aircraft had to be organized.

︎ In Saudi Arabia, Baerbock wanted to meet with Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan on Monday afternoon in the port city of Jeddah on the Red Sea.

During her three-day visit to the Gulf region, Baerbock wants to promote peace solutions in Yemen and Sudan. “The fact that Saudi Arabia is now focusing on talks with the Houthis in Yemen is the right first step,” she said before leaving.

The Foreign Minister announced that she also wanted to talk about human rights. A dialogue also includes “looking each other in the eye on issues on which we are far apart”. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are internationally criticized for human rights violations.
