Ann-Katrin Berger is fighting cancer and for a place in the German goal

Ann-Katrin Berger has twice been seriously ill with cancer. And fought his way back again and again – right up to the national team. In the interview she talks about radioactive tablets, loneliness and her desire for penalties

Ms. Berger, last summer you were diagnosed with thyroid cancer for the second time. Just a month after the diagnosis you were back on the pitch with Chelsea FC and now you are playing the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with the German national team. Do you sometimes marvel at your path?
No, because I know how much I’ve done to come back. Back then, I tried to see cancer as a game that I absolutely had to win. Sport was my scaffolding that I clung to. And it lasted.

Is it really that simple?
