For several days, the fate of a stolen bearded monkey from Leipzig Zoo was unclear. Now the animal has been found again.

A missing bearded monkey is back in the Leipzig Zoo. The zoo said the animal was discovered externally unharmed in the Reudnitz district of Leipzig. A team of zookeepers brought the 15-year-old female named Ruma back to the zoo. The monkey was reported stolen on Easter Sunday after its enclosure was broken into.

According to the zoo, the police received a tip that a bearded monkey had been spotted in a tree in the Reudnitz district of Leipzig. The zoo team moved out immediately. In the meantime, the monkey ran into a nearby apartment building and was caught there.

“We are relieved that our female bearded monkey is doing well after an initial examination. There are no external injuries to be seen, but she appears weakened,” explained zoo director Junhold. He thanked the whistleblower who discovered the monkey in the tree.

The investigation into the theft was ongoing. The animal’s absence was discovered on the morning of Easter Sunday. According to the zoo, there were clear signs of break-in at the enclosure. The stolen monkey’s companion, a 12-year-old male, remained unharmed at the facility.
