Animals: How chimpanzees heal wounds – Knowledge

Many primatologists consider chimpanzees to be selfish. Researchers have now observed how the animals catch insects to treat wounds on themselves and others. Are apes more similar to humans in their social behavior than previously thought?

Actually, Alessandra Mascaro just wanted to practice with her camera. As a volunteer at Ozouga chimpanzee project in Gabon she roamed Loango National Park and filmed whenever she got a chimpanzee in front of her lens. One day she managed to take a spectacular picture: the female chimpanzee Suzee was putting something on an open wound on the foot of her adult son Sia. “Later that evening I watched my videos again and discovered that Suzee had just made a quick motion with her hand to catch something, which she then took between her lips and then placed on the wound on Sia’s foot says Mascaro. As it turned out later, it was an insect.
