The Minister of Agriculture and his initiative for more animal welfare in the pigsty are met with anger and resistance – from farmers and also from their own government. If he really wants to achieve something, he has to show willingness to conflict now.

Animal welfare, that’s a comforting word. Pretty much everyone supports it, wants better living conditions for pigs, cattle or poultry. Only when it comes to implementing concrete measures do farmer representatives and parts of the government so resolutely stand in the way that business as usual could win out in the end. Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir now has to show his teeth. Finally. Good intentions are no longer enough.
