Animal protection: South Korea bans consumption of dog meat – Economy

The consumption of dog meat will now be banned in South Korea. Parliament in Seoul approved a special law on Tuesday that would ban the breeding, slaughter and distribution of dogs for human consumption under penalty of law. There is a three-year transition period before the law takes effect.

Eating dog meat has a long tradition in the Asian country. In recent years, however, protests against this by animal rights activists in particular have increased. Members of the Korean Dog Meat Association protested against a legal ban.
