Andy Warhol: New illustrated book documents his rise to adored superstardom

Award-winning photographer Steve Schapiro passed away in January 2022 at the age of 87. The American became known for the photos he took of the civil rights march on Washington in 1963, when Martin Luther King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. In 1968 Schapiro documented Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential election campaign, later he took numerous pictures on film sets and created record covers for David Bowie and Barbra Streisand.

Taschen Verlag has now published an illustrated book devoted to Schapiro’s photographs of Andy Warhol. In the mid-sixties, the US magazine “Life” commissioned the photographer to capture the rise of the pop artist for a report. But the story was never published, many of Schapiro’s recordings were dormant in the archive – until now.

The book shows numerous pictures of Warhol and his entourage. Schapiro accompanied her for two years, taking photos in the New York Factory, at vernissages, parties, film shoots and on trips. In this way, the photographer documented Warhol’s rise to the adored superstar.

Steve Schapiro’s photo book “Andy Warhol and Friends” is in a Edition of 600 copies in the Taschen Verlag appeared and costs 850 euros.
