an inmate killed in the courtyard of the prison of Avignon

An altercation between prisoners in the courtyard is the cause of the death of an inmate, this Wednesday at the penitentiary center of Avignon-Le Pontet, we learned from the Avignon prosecutor’s office and from a union source. “The circumstances are yet to be determined”, indicates the prosecutor of Avignon Florence Galtier, who went to the scene. According to the Force Ouvrière (FO) union, “a violent fight” broke out between detainees when one of them was “stabbed”.

“The supervisors did not hesitate to enter the courtyard to extract the victim in order to provide him with first aid, in vain because he died of his injuries,” adds FO. The Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti visited at the same time in Marseille the site of the extension of the penitentiary establishment of Baumettes, known as “Baumettes 3”.

It was in a first extension of this emblematic Marseille prison, “Baumettes 2” (1,182 places), that a 30-year-old prisoner was seriously burned in the fire in his cell, on the night of Sunday to Monday.
