An inmate entrenched on the roof of the prison to demand a better bed

A detainee from the Toul detention center (Meurthe-et-Moselle) spent Tuesday afternoon… on the roof of the prison. Not to escape. No, the 25-year-old man was asking for a medical bed. He finally surrendered to the regional intervention team in Strasbourg “after negotiations”, announced the prison administration. “There are no injuries and the detainee has been placed in the disciplinary unit: he will soon go to immediate appearance,” added the administration.

The regional intervention and security team (Eris) had arrived from Strasbourg in the afternoon. The detainee had climbed onto the roof around 2 p.m., said a police source, adding that police and firefighters were also nearby.

The detainee had demanded “the provision of a therapeutic bed because of lumbar pain”, specified in the evening François Pérain, the prosecutor of Nancy. The decision to prescribe it by the doctor of the medical service encouraged the detainee to surrender.

Incarcerated since April 2018, in particular for aggravated violence, the detainee had already been sentenced in the past to a one-year sentence for attempted escape.

The man had thrown tiles from the top of the roof, without however targeting the firefighters, who intervened first, further specified the prosecutor. The prosecution therefore requested an investigation for degradation for which the detainee will be extracted and placed in police custody.
