Ammergau Alps: glider pilot crashes – pilot dies – Bavaria

The pilot died when a glider crashed in the Ammergau Alps. According to the police on Friday, the 60-year-old took off from the Ohlstadt airfield (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) on Wednesday afternoon, but did not return by the evening. After attempts to make contact by radio failed, two helicopters initially looked in vain for the plane.

During the course of Thursday, three helicopters were involved in the search – both on the Bavarian and the Tyrolean side, as the police also said. At the Kuchelbergkopf, a helicopter crew finally discovered the wreck of the glider pilot. Next to it is the pilot’s corpse.

The body was recovered from the impassable terrain by a police helicopter using a winch. Why exactly the glider crashed remained unclear at first.
