The French soccer player Aminata Diallo was arrested by the police after an attack on Kheira Hamraoui. The 26-year-old is suspected of having commissioned the assassination attempt on her teammate.

Aminata Diallo was arrested by the police on Wednesday morning. The 26-year-old soccer player, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), is said to be linked to a violent attack on her teammate Kheira Hamraoui. The top French club has since confirmed corresponding media reports. The police in Versailles are investigating after an attack last Thursday against the player and have taken her into custody, PSG said.

Teammate is said to have commissioned the attack

Diallo and Hamraoui drove home together after a club dinner last Thursday when unknown men pulled the 31-year-old passenger out of the car and hit her legs with an iron bar.

Hamraoui’s teammate Diallo is said to be behind the attack. The French sports daily “L’Equipe” was the first to report on the incident and spoke of a trap into which Diallo is said to have lured her teammate. It is not yet clear whether the 26-year-old midfielder actually has anything to do with the attack. According to various media reports, there have been no charges so far.

Aminata Diallo played against Real Madrid

In the statement released this Wednesday, PSG condemned the violence in the strongest possible terms and announced that it would support the responsible authorities with all means at their disposal.

Diallo was still on the starting line-up for the Champions League game against Real Madrid on Tuesday. PSG won 4-0. Diallo was on the field for almost the entire season. Hamraoui, on the other hand, was absent for “personal reasons”, according to Paris.

Fall brings back memories of Nancy Kerrigan

The case bears strong similarities to one of the greatest crimes in sports history. In January 1994, the American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was also badly injured in the knee with an iron bar. The attack was commissioned by Jeff Gillooly, husband of Kerrigan’s opponent Tonya Harding.
