Amazon extends the return period significantly – but not for all items

Apparently, Amazon has greatly extended the periods for returning many items – in certain cases, purchases can now be undone for up to 180 days.

Since the end of January, there has been a noticeable amount of movement in Amazon’s delivery modalities. The online shop increased the minimum order value from 29 to 39 euros several times – and repeatedly canceled the change, citing an error (this is how you generally avoid shipping costs). Now there seems to be adjustments to the return period. Because attentive users of the bargain portal “Mydealz” noticed that some orders can be returned for up to 180 days – apparently also retrospectively.

However, the new deadline does not affect all items and orders, only those that come from Amazon, i.e. have been sold and shipped there. Goods from the marketplace or used items from the “Amazon Warehouse” do not count, but continue to be subject to the previous regulations.

180 days – instead of the original 30

For the offers whose return period has now been extended, Amazon writes: “The item can be returned within 180 days of receipt in its original condition for a full refund or replacement.” Curious: Under this sentence, Amazon refers to the Return Policy, but there is no longer any talk of the 180 days. Amazon does not explain to what extent the stated original condition differs from “new condition”. Clothing, for example, remains in its original condition even after you have tried it on – i.e. unpacked it.

In some cases, the extended period also applies to items that have long been ordered. Example: The author of this article ordered Dremel grinding wheels at the end of August 2022. The return period suddenly ends at the end of February.

Meanwhile, Amazon is silent on the changes. It is therefore still unclear whether it is a mistake – like the increased minimum order value – or whether Amazon is actually taking back numerous goods at full price even after six months.
