Stormy weather and lots of sun: In the first three months, around 74.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated from renewable energies, almost 25 percent more than in the same period last year.

The stormy weather in January and February and the sunny March caused power generation from renewable energies to rise sharply in the first quarter.

According to an extrapolation, around 74.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated from renewable energies in the first three months, almost 25 percent more than in the same period last year. The stormy weather in February even made for a new record month in electricity generation from wind energy with 20.6 billion kilowatt hours, reported the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW ) on Monday. Renewable energies covered a total of 54 percent of electricity consumption in January and February.

“The high proportion of renewables in the first few months of this year should not hide the fact that the expansion of renewables is proceeding far too slowly,” said BDEW Managing Director Kerstin Andreae, according to a statement. Against the background of the war in Ukraine and the associated concerns about the energy supply, it is important to quickly become independent of fossil fuels and thus Russian imports. “Measures to massively advance the expansion of renewables are more urgent than ever.”
