The German hopeful Kira Weidle missed the hoped-for top place in the downhill of the Alpine World Ski Championships. The Starnberg native took eighth place in Méribel, France.

The downhill is the parade discipline of the 26-year-old. Two years ago in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, she won silver at the World Championships. After finishing 23rd in the Super-G, she experienced the next disappointment in the title fights in France. Weidle’s teammate Emma Aicher retired after a driving error.

Surprisingly, the Swiss Jasmine Flury, who has only won one World Cup race in her career, secured gold. Second was the Austrian Nina Ortlieb ahead of the Swiss title defender and Olympic champion Corinne Suter.

Top favorite Sofia Goggia threaded a goal and just avoided a fall, but was eliminated. In 2021 at her home game in Cortina, the Italian was injured. The Olympic champion from 2018 and the dominating downhill skier in the World Cup in recent years is still waiting for the first World Cup medal in her special discipline.
