Ski wonder! “Almost at the hotel”

Daniel Yule achieves something historic at the Slalom World Cup in Chamonix. The Swiss himself no longer believed in it. Linus Strasser, on the other hand, is frustrated.

Hard landing after the high: Ski racer Linus Straßer clearly missed his third victory in a row in the historic comeback by the Swiss Daniel Yule.

The triumphant from Kitzbühel and Schladming couldn’t cope with the much easier slope in Chamonix and only finished in 14th place. Meanwhile, the Swiss made history: Yule became the first slalom skier in the World Cup to race all the way up from 30th place at the halfway point.

“I didn’t believe in it. The backlog was already huge. Actually, I was almost at the hotel and packed my things, but I got another chance and packed them. It’s unbelievable, difficult to understand,” said Yule after the incredible comeback SRF.

At the same time, he admitted that he was “lucky. I could have finished 31st. But today luck was on my side. I was really angry after the first run and now the emotions are totally different.”

Straßer, who gained three places in the final when the slope conditions deteriorated, was last placed worse in a World Cup slalom when he finished 16th in March 2023 in Andorra. “It’s just Chamonix, it feels the same every year,” he said, frustrated by the circumstances.

Yule had “already packed things”

Yule, who was still 1.93 seconds behind Olympic champion Clement Noel (France) before the final, used this perfectly to achieve his seventh victory ahead of his teammate Loic Meillard (+0.16). Noel came third (+0.18), Straßer was 0.60 seconds behind.

“This is absolutely incredible. I was really lucky with the slope, but also a wonderful second run,” said Yule. Because he was sure he would miss the final, he had “already packed my things and wanted to go back to the hotel.” But he made it into the top 30 by 0.05 seconds and then to the top.

Sebastian Holzmann retired in the seventh race for the first time this winter. Anton Tremmel, Fabian Himmelsbach and Linus Witte also missed the second round.
