The Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami won the alpine season opener in Sölden.

The Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami started the alpine season in Sölden won.

The Olympic bronze medalist won the giant slalom on the legendary Rettenbachferner after a strong second run with a lead of just 0.02 seconds over the Italian Federica Brignone. The Slovakian Petra Vlhova came third (+0.14 seconds). The favored American and World Cup record winner Mikaela Shiffrin (+1.40 seconds) had to settle for sixth place.

The only German starter, Emma Aicher, did not make it into the second round in 41st place in front of more than 15,000 spectators and in perfect conditions. “It started okay. After a mistake on the steep slope I couldn’t really find my rhythm anymore,” said the 19-year-old.

Mowinckel disqualified

Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel’s undoing was the new fluorine ban by the World Federation Fis. According to race director Peter Gerdol, an extremely high value was measured on the skis of the World Cup third place. She was then disqualified. The use of fluoro wax is no longer permitted when preparing skis from this season. There have recently been major doubts about the reliability of the tests. Mowinckel was in sixth place after the first run.
