Italian ski racer Federica Brignone won the first Super-G of the weekend in St Anton, Austria.

In her 21st World Cup victory, the 32-year-old was a clear 0.54 seconds ahead of second-placed Joana Hählen from Switzerland. Third was Hählen’s compatriot Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.66 seconds).

Germany’s best speed driver Kira Weidle surprisingly took seventh place and thus set the best Super-G result of her career. The girl from Starnberg, whose greatest strengths lie in the downhill, threw up her arms with joy in the finish area. “It was a brutally tough race,” the 26-year-old told ARD. “I’m happy with the result.” She is pleased that things are now “going forward” in this discipline as well. Weidle’s teammate Katrin Hirtl-Stanggassinger finished 33rd, Emma Aicher retired.

Originally, a descent should have taken place in St. Anton on Saturday. Since no training could be held in the days before due to the weather, it was canceled and replaced by a Super-G. This had to be shortened due to large amounts of fresh snow. The athletes went from the reserve start to the Karl Schranz race track. Another Super-G is scheduled for Sunday.
