A man convicted of spying for Israel has been executed in Iran. He is said to have collected confidential information for the Mossad secret service and passed on classified documents.

An alleged Israeli secret service agent has been executed in southeastern Iran. The man is said to have had contact with the Mossad and other foreign secret services and passed them classified documents, according to a report by the Tasnim news agency.

The execution took place in Sahedan, the capital of the province of Sistan and Balochistan. According to the justice portal Misan Online, the death sentence against the “spy of the Zionist regime” was carried out in Sahedan prison. The portal did not provide any information about the man’s identity or the legal proceedings against him.

Several arrests on allegations of espionage

Iranian authorities had previously announced the arrest of several men on charges of spying for foreign countries, including Israel. In December 2022, four men convicted of working with Israeli secret services were hanged in Iran.

Iran does not recognize Israel’s right to exist. Tehran accuses Israel of several acts of sabotage and killings aimed at its nuclear program. The US and Israel accuse Iran of involvement in missile and drone attacks on Israeli-linked ships in the Persian Gulf.

According to several human rights groups, Iran is the country with the second largest number of executions in the world after China. The Norway-based organization Iran Human Rights reported that more than 600 people had been executed since the beginning of the year alone. That is the highest number in eight years.
