Allegations of corruption – Eva Kaili remains in custody – Politics

The former Vice-President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, who was arrested on suspicion of corruption, remains in prison. The competent court decided on Thursday, as the public prosecutor announced. Accordingly, Kaili now has 24 hours to take action against the decision. Kaili’s lawyer had previously affirmed that his client was innocent. The judiciary charges Kaili and other suspects with involvement in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption. It is about alleged influence on political decisions of the EU Parliament by Qatar and Morocco. Investigators uncovered this in December. Kaili’s lawyer, however, blamed the Belgian authorities for their interim conditions of detention. “The conditions in the police cell in Brussels are reminiscent of the Middle Ages,” said Michalis Dimitrakopoulos. “It’s all torture.” He claimed Kaili was in solitary confinement and deprived of sleep. Overall, she was held at the police station from January 11 to 12 and is now being held in Haren prison, Dimitrakopoulos confirmed. According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice, detainees in the recently opened prison are housed in their own cells with showers.
