All industries must “contribute” and “be accountable”, proclaims the president of COP28

D-5 for the high mass of the environment in Dubai. A few days before the opening of the 28th United Nations climate conference, “the most important COP” since the Paris agreement, its president Sultan Al Jaber is “cautiously optimistic” in an interview with AFP on the summit success. “We are halfway between Paris and 2030 (…), so it is an inflection point” to compare the objectives set with the trajectory of global warming.

“I said that I will hold everyone, and all industries, responsible and accountable for keeping the 1.5°C objective within reach,” insists the man who also heads the oil company Adnoc. Aware of the criticism in this sector, he assures that “everyone must assume their responsibilities and be held accountable. This includes all industries, including high-emitting industries such as aviation, transportation, aluminum, cement, steel, and the oil and gas industry. »

A year after a COP27 marked by tensions between countries of the North and the South on the question of financing the transition and reparations, Sultan Al Jaber affirms that “there will be other commitments, the dynamic will continue to refinance the Green Climate Fund”. “We must encourage financing from the private sector,” he insists. “I would do everything” to obtain, from the start of the conference, an agreement from the participating countries on the “loss and damage” fund, on which a compromise was found in Abu Dhabi on November 4.

“I am very motivated, very enthusiastic” after the “signals coming from the United States-China summit”, the “very positive result” of the transition committee or even its “successful” visit to the EU, says Sultan Al Jaber. “We are making great progress on energy, finance, health and nature,” he assures.
