Even after the severe criticism of her open letter to Olaf Scholz regarding arms deliveries to Ukraine, Alice Schwarzer remains of her opinion. In a dispute with FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the publicist follows up again.
In the controversy over arms deliveries to Ukraine, the publicist Alice Schwarzer sharply criticized the chair of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag. “You are driving your tank towards the catastrophe at top speed. Could you please pull the brakes?” Schwarzer says in an argument in the “Mirror” to the FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. She replies: “On behalf of these women in Ukraine who are experiencing so much suffering, I will not slow down the tanks, I will let them move on so that this slaughter ends.”
Schwarzer recently initiated an open letter in which she and other celebrities called on the Chancellor to refrain from delivering weapons. In the debate, the publicist said that Germany should not “lull Ukraine into the illusion that it could finally defeat the world’s largest nuclear power, Russia.” It would be fatal to let Kyiv believe this: “Because then we would have shared responsibility for the total destruction of the country, the suffering and even more deaths.”
Strack-Zimmermann replies that Ukraine has a good chance that this war will turn out differently than Vladimir Putin had imagined, “but only if the West, including us, provide the necessary support”.
The conflict in Ukraine is about the free world, about human rights, democracy and peace in freedom. “It is now a battle of the systems. It must not be possible for Putin to assert himself here,” says Strack-Zimmermann. Schwarzer emphasizes that it’s not about values like democracy: “This isn’t just a request concert. This war is a question of power.”
Strack-Zimmermann says one war aim is to bring Vladimir Putin to justice in The Hague. Schwarzer is appalled: “Before he can be tried in The Hague, he would probably drag us down the abyss.”
The FDP politician expresses her astonishment that Schwarzer, as a feminist, does not protest against the suffering of women in Ukraine in her letter. Schwarzer says: “As a feminist, I would be really embarrassed to talk about feminist foreign policy now.”
