Ryan Reynolds is bringing Alf back to the TV screen — at least a little

Alien Alf is coming back to the TV screen – but not with new episodes, but as an advertising character. Behind it is Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds with his transmitter.

A furry extraterrestrial with an oversized nose who accidentally lands on earth and becomes part of a human family – many may still remember the TV series “Alf”. In the late eighties it first ran in the USA, with a slight shift also on German television.

The last new episode in Germany was broadcast in the summer of 1991, another film followed, and then nothing more was heard of the likeable, somewhat clumsy alien and the Tanner family. But Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) wants to bring the character back to the television screen. At least a little – because anyone hoping for newly produced episodes of the series will be disappointed.

Ryan Reynolds is producing commercials starring Alf

Instead, Reynolds is making Alf a feature on his streaming channel Maximum Effort Channel — an online channel with linear programming that has recently become available. The 46-year-old started the broadcaster with his film production company, which he founded in 2018. On July 29, Maximum Effort Channel will air numerous old episodes of the sitcom as part of an “Alf Caturday Marathon.”

These are interrupted by short commercials that were specially produced for this occasion and in which Alf appears. Among other things, the alien advertises financial products or hair care products. By the way, the character is voiced – like in the original from the late eighties – by series creator Paul Fusco. The Maximum Effort Channel is not available in Germany, but Reynolds published the commercials on YouTube.

Reynolds and company wanted to “blur the lines between show and commercials,” the actor explained, “because we think both can be equally entertaining.” Even as a child he was a big fan of Alf.
