There was a time, long before the war, when Alexei Navalny was always annoyed by the same question: Why, did journalists want to know from him, was he still walking around freely? Why isn’t he in prison? Or dead? Some considered him to be a secret employee of Putin’s system. He had become so strong, his movement so powerful, it actually didn’t seem possible. Even back then, Putin’s authoritarian regime left no room for loud critics.
