Alexander Kekulé has become one of the most prominent virologists in the country during the corona pandemic. Now he’s in trouble with his employer. The University of Halle has initiated proceedings against him. Kekulé is initially no longer allowed to research or teach there.

According to his own statements, the virologist Alexander Kekulé is no longer allowed to work at the University of Halle for the time being. The Martin Luther University had pronounced a “temporary dismissal” against him, said Kekulé, who holds a professorship there, the German press agency. He has already spoken to a lawyer and will take legal action against it. The “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” (MZ) had previously reported that Kekulé was initially no longer allowed to research and teach. The university did not want to comment on the process to the newspaper on Tuesday. “In principle, we do not comment on personnel matters,” said a spokeswoman.

In an interview with the MZ, Kekulé spoke of a “political process”. For years he has been complaining about the lack of equipment in his chair, and the university has not fulfilled promises. Now the university is apparently trying to get rid of him with allegations. When it comes to teaching commitments, it’s just a form that he may not have filled out correctly.

According to civil service law, temporary dismissal can be issued once disciplinary proceedings have been initiated. The official is thus temporarily prohibited from continuing his official business. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the measure is primarily intended for those cases in which it is to be expected that “in the disciplinary proceedings the removal from the civil servant relationship will presumably be pronounced”.
