Alexander Herrmann: Five everyday recipes from the star chef

Herta knew how it was done. She lived what many nutrition gurus preach today: she ate healthily, exercised a lot and cultivated a positive attitude to life. She lived to the age of 104 and remained in excellent health until old age – spared from arthritis, cardiovascular problems and diabetes. “My grandmother showed me how to grow old in good health,” says the Franconian TV chef. Herrmann shows in his new book how healthy eating can be achieved without sacrificing enjoyment. Cookbook “Because it’s simply healthier”.

At first glance, what Grandma Herta called a rich diet seems rather extravagant. Apart from the daily sauerkraut drink, the lady had a large breakfast with plenty of whole grain bread, but otherwise she was modest. At lunch she only ate a little something (definitely not pasta), in the afternoon a piece of cheesecake (without a base) and in the evening, when she usually had almost nothing with red wine. On closer inspection, this was a highly modern diet. Herta not only practiced intermittent fasting without knowing what it was, she also chose healthy foods as a matter of course. Among other things, she relied on local superfoods, complex carbohydrates and fermented foods.

“What you ‘incorporate’ into your body is what it lives and must live on,” says Herrmann. Food is fuel and has an influence on our physical and psychological well-being. He explains what intuitive nutrition means, what individuals can pay attention to and which foods are kings on the supermarket shelf. The new cookbook is his “culinary first aid kit.”

But that’s not all. The book is also a guide to healthy feasting in 70 recipes – whether to start the day, as a small meal or as a main course. The sauerkraut juice is not included, by the way, but instead, as befits a star chef, there are great recipes such as iced matcha tea with pepper foam, trofie with avocado pesto, pistachios and melted tomatoes or glazed duck breast with sea buckthorn or saffron honey and pumpkin.
