During his struggle back to life, this time could give him a lot of strength: ex-racing driver Alessandro Zanardi can spend the Christmas holidays at home with his family around a year and a half after his serious handbike accident. “A very important step was that Alex was able to leave the clinic a few weeks ago and be back at home. We had to wait a long time for that,” explained his wife Daniela in an interview with Zanardi’s long-term motorsport partner BMW.

Alessandro Zanardi: The struggle back to life

There is still a long way to go before Zanardi. This probably also includes further stays in special clinics for rehabilitation measures.

The Italian is currently receiving all-round care within his own four walls: “During the week a therapist works with him and they do physical, neurological and speech therapy exercises,” reported his wife.

Two accidents with consequences

On June 19, 2020, the life of the former racing driver had changed. Once again. After Zanardi lost both legs in an accident at the Lausitzring in 2001, he never gave up competitive sport and won the Paralympics in a handbike.

He was also on the road with his special bike last summer when he lost control of it on a sloping road in Tuscany and collided with a truck. Zanardi suffered severe head and face injuries, had to undergo multiple operations and was in an artificial coma.
