Alec Baldwin first spoke in front of the camera about the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins: “She was my friend.”

Alec Baldwin (63) spoke for the first time in front of the camera about the tragic accident on the set of the western “Rust” in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) lost her life. “She was my friend. The day I got to Santa Fe to start filming, I took her out to dinner with Joel, the director,” Baldwin told numerous paparazzi who called him and his wife Hilaria, 37, over the weekend in Vermont, USA. The US tabloid portal “TMZ” has a video of the conversation.

They were a “very well-rehearsed crew” and “then this terrible event happened,” recalls the actor. “There are film set accidents from time to time, but nothing like that,” explains Baldwin. “This is a one-time event among trillions.”

Baldwin is in touch with Hutchins’ family

Baldwin’s main concern is Hutchins’ son and her widower, Matthew. He met the latter shortly after the accident at a hotel in Santa Fe. “This man is overwhelmed with grief,” says the 63-year-old. He would be in constant contact with the family.

As for the safety precautions regarding firearms on the set, Baldwin would like to see a rethink in the future. “I would be extremely happy if firearms were only used to a limited extent on film sets in the future. How many bullets have been fired there in the last 75 years? This is America,” said the Hollywood star, who himself can look back on several decades in the film business . New safety precautions are needed, such as plastic dummies and rubber bullets. However, he is not an expert, so the decision is not his.

Baldwin acted not only as a performer but also as a producer on the western “Rust”. When asked if the film will be finalized after the accident, the actor replied, “No, I don’t think so.”

The tragedy on the “Rust” set

As part of the filming in the US state of New Mexico, a shot was accidentally released on October 21 when actor Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a weapon handed to him. The 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins and the director Joel Souza (48) were shot on the set. The camerawoman died as a result of her injuries. Souza was able to leave the hospital the next day and was last seen wearing an arm sling outside his home in California.

Baldwin is said not to have known that the gun in his hand was loaded with live ammunition. Assistant director Dave Halls handed it to him and said it was a “cold weapon”. Halls later admitted to police that he hadn’t properly checked the gun. The authorities at the location of the movie set in New Mexico are currently investigating the case. However, Baldwin could not say anything about the ongoing investigation: “I cannot answer any questions about the investigation. I cannot.”
