The fatal accident on the set of the western “Rust” is still occupying investigators and prosecutors. Alec Baldwin said in an interview that he never fired the gun. The prosecutor has now spoken about whether that can be the case.

“The trigger didn’t pull – I didn’t pull the trigger,” Alec Baldwin said in December last year in his biggest interview after the fatal accident on the set of the western “Rust.” “I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger. Never,” affirmed the actor.

In October, Baldwin accidentally fired at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal. She died a short time later in hospital as a result of her injuries. Hutchins’ family filed a lawsuit against the Hollywood star last week.

But can a gun really fire without the trigger being pulled? Public prosecutor Mary Carmack-Altwies also has to investigate this mystery. She and her team are investigating the “Rust” case. The attorney also spoke to Vanity Fair about Baldwin’s testimony in the ABC News interview.

To get to the bottom of the question, Carmack-Altwies had to look into the type of weapon used on set. “I didn’t know much about guns, especially revolvers from the 1850s. When I first heard that, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s crazy,'” she told Vanity Fair.

She therefore asked one of her investigators to send her such a pistol. After some testing, it was clear: “You can pull the hammer back without pulling the trigger and without locking it. So if you pull it back a little, it doesn’t lock, and then when you let go, the firing pin can detonate the bullet’s primer meet,” she said, confirming that Baldwin may well be right.
