Changes in the supermarket in 2022: Aldi, Lidl and more are banning plastic bags

The first change directly affects an aid that can usually be found at supermarket checkouts. From January 1st, plastic shopping bags may no longer be sold or offered in German supermarkets. These are so-called “light plastic carrier bags” with a wall thickness between 15 and 50 micrometers. The following are excluded from the rule:

  • Stable reusable bags (e.g. cooler bags)
  • Paper bags
  • Thin plastic bag near fruits and vegetables

It is also in other areas Single-use plastic has already been banned since summer 2021*. The disappearance of the plastic bags therefore comes as no surprise to many. According to Chip.de some branches of Aldi (south and north), Lidl and Rewe have also removed most of the plastic bags from their checkout areas ahead of time.

Supermarkets 2022: Changes to minimum half-time dates

The next change could benefit consumers, or rather the wallet. Because in 2022 many bargains and discounts could pile up shortly before the store closes. The reason: It will be easier for supermarkets to sell groceries with an upcoming expiry date or perishable products at a lower price.

Previously, the articles had to be awarded the old and the new price. This was often too cumbersome for retailers and food that was actually still good was often simply thrown away in the garbage.

From May 2022, the following applies: For foods that are just before the best-before date, it is sufficient if, for example, a “30 percent cheaper” notice is attached. That should make the sale easier. At the same time, in the EU, the Best before date and its marking* discussed.

New deposit rules 2022: This is what supermarket customers have to pay attention to

One of the biggest changes in the supermarket is likely to be to expand the deposit system. Because from the On January 1, 2022, a deposit also applies to other drinks in the supermarket*, as before. In this case, one-way plastic bottles are generally subject to a deposit. Drinks cans are also subject to a deposit, and so are wine and spirits.

There is initially a special regulation for packaging with milk beverages. Here, the deposit obligation is not to be extended until January 1, 2024, this is regulated in Section 31 of the Packaging Act.

A trade closure is loud Chip.de nevertheless largely excluded. The food supply in Germany is expected to remain secure in 2022. However, it is unclear whether there could be delivery problems in some areas. So there was around 2021 in the At Christmas time there are sometimes shortages of toys*.

Most companies expect that the situation in the logistics industry could ease in the second quarter of 2022. Dealers are still complaining about missing products in their warehouses and it is unclear whether the supplies will even arrive.
